The Squadron of Merit award recognizes excellence in cadet programs, based on recruitment, retention, promotions and cadet achievement. Our squadron could not have won these awards without the hard work of every member. These are truly team awards, earned through the diligence, effort and leadership of every cadet and senior member. Congratulations go to each of us!

Spartanburg Squadron's Annual Open house draws the local paper and TV News

Open House Photos

Article written and in the Spartanburg Herald Journal:

By Mesha Y. Williams Staff Writer mesha.williams@shj.com

Janet Statham never dreamed she would walk down a 60-foot wall or even have a chance to fly on a C-130 aircraft. However, since becoming deputy commander for cadets in the Civil Air Patrol the Boiling Springs mother has done more things now than she could ever imagine because of the program. "I have developed an interest in things that I didn't even know I had," she said. "There are all kinds of opportunities open here." CAP tried spreading that message Monday evening when the organization held an open house at its headquarters at the Spartanburg Downtown Airport. CAP is the official Air Force Auxiliary and a nonprofit organization. It performs more than 85 percent of inland search and rescue missions in the United States. People join CAP for a variety of reasons. Most young adults said the organization has helped them develop confidence, discipline and public speaking skills. Volunteers serve as mentors for young people in the cadet program and are leaders in aerospace education. Over the past couple of years, CAP has seen the number of cadets joining the organization increase. It has gone from 10 to 70 members in the past year, Statham said. There are about 40 senior CAP members, ranging in age from 18 years and older. "The growth has been phenomenal," she said. The South Carolina Air Force Association recognized the organization as being the most outstanding CAP of the year in May. Cadet leader Ian Sutton, 17, said his membership to CAP was approved on Sept. 11, 2001. He wants to receive pilot training and have a career in the military. "In the two years I have been here, I've seen the cadet program grow so rapidly and the opportunities we have had has been amazing," the Broome High School student said. "There is no other place I know of where you can get these opportunities we offer." One CAP cadet was selected to attend West Point Military Academy for the upcoming academic year. In addition, a senior member returned from a Glider Encampment in Georgia this summer. At CAP's open house on Monday that message reached a lot of people. Thirteen-year-old Adam Purcell of Woodruff said he would like to join the program because he hopes to attend a military academy someday. His grandfather was a pilot in the Vietnam War, he said. "It would be fun to go on missions, and I just really want to serve my country," he said. Leaders of Girl Scout troops 53 and 57 of Spartanburg County brought a group of members to the open house to show them different career choices. Caitlin Kimbrell, 10, has wanted to be a pilot since she was taken up in a glider when she was younger. "I've always wanted to be different." Whatever the reason a person chooses to join CAP, Steven Hollifield said, he's just proud to be associated with the program. "This program has taught me things that I never thought I would do in my regular life," he said. For more information about the program visit Civil Air Patrol, at www.scwg.cap.gov/sptg.

Some have the desire to soar with eagles. Others love the military and follow the lure of the uniform.

No matter what the reason for joining the Civil Air Patrol, young people who've completed the fifth grade up to age 18 learn discipline and leadership skills. Many overcome shyness, develop public speaking expertise and gain confidence and self-esteem.

"It's helped me so much I don't know how to describe it," said 12-year-old Daniel Connor, a member of the Spartanburg Composite Squadron for almost a year.

The 61-year-old Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is the official Air Force Auxiliary and a nonprofit organization. It performs more than 85 percent of inland search and rescue missions in the United States.

Volunteers serve as mentors for young people in the cadet program and take a leading role in aerospace education.

A CAP aircraft was the only airplane allowed to fly over the World Trade Center disaster site in the first hours after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, transmitting photographs back to state officials. The South Carolina CAP was in charge of communications for the state Emergency Operations Center after the attacks.

Since then the CAP has taken a leading role in homeland security. The Spartanburg Composite Squadron has helped with security at Freedom Weekend Aloft and air shows.

A Herald-Journal article in July 2001 led one of the squadron's most active cadets to join the CAP.

David Collins, 17, of Boiling Springs said he first heard of CAP through the article and "the opportunity for flight and basic military instruction piqued my interest. It's given me good insight and the chance to fly, something I've looked forward to all my life."

Collins has advanced to the rank of first sergeant and cadet in charge in his time with the squadron. He's also won both the Wing and Middle East Region speaking competitions in the impromptu category.

He said the discipline he's learned has helped in his school work and participation in dramatic arts at Boiling Springs High School.

Spartanburg cadets Ian Sutton and Kyle Knight placed second and third, respectively, in the Wing competition for advanced speaking.

As a bonus, Collins said, CAP is "tremendous fun."

The chance to explore the wild blue yonder also intrigued Connor. Cadets get in at least 10 hours of flying time each year, five in a power aircraft and five in a glider.

"I've always been interested in planes and the military, and I was talking to my grandpa one Sunday, and he gave me an article from the paper, and I read it," Connor said. "I joined, and it's been great ever since."

Deputy Commander for Cadets 1st Lt. Michael Desrochers said within a month after the article appeared he had 25 new cadets. The squadron has grown from six cadets to 41 in a year, reported 2nd Lt. Heleno Souza, public affairs officer.

Megan McKenzie joined the CAP 3½ years ago and would like to see more young women involved.

"Young women have as much right as young males. It gives them the chance to be equal with males. That's why I joined," the Anderson College sophomore said.

CAP also had "given me discipline that I wouldn't have had otherwise," McKenzie, 18, said. "At the end of my freshman year I had a 4.0 because of Civil Air Patrol. It helped me mature because you have to be responsible and mature."

Collins and Connor hope to attend the Air Force Academy and become pilots.

Achieving rank in the CAP virtually assures an appointment to the academy, Desrochers said.

Souza said the CAP nationwide has placed 420 cadets in the Air Force Academy, 200 cadets at West Point and 125 in the Naval Academy. "If they join and want to enlist in the Air Force, they have one stripe already."

Desrochers said the Spartanburg squadron has the second most glider flights in the nation, so many that they have requested a second glider. The Spartanburg Composite Squadron has the glider program for South Carolina.

Squadron Commander Lt. Col. Charles Glace, a Spartanburg physician, recently had the glider in Georgia for the National Glider Academy and flew 123 flights in 10 days.

He's delighted to have 48 cadets on the roll now and particularly pleased that many parents are involved.

"Everything we have is donated. We can do so much online, it's great that we're getting a telephone line," Glace said gesturing toward two parents working at installing the line.

One of those workers, Keith Medlock of Boiling Springs, said he brings his son Corey, 14, to meetings and decided to help with maintenance."

He's seen improvement in his son since he joined the CAP in November. "He's more disciplined, more level-headed. He takes more responsibility."

Daphne Dawson said she's seen a change in her son, Airman John Dawson, 14, as well. "It's made a difference. He's even getting picky about the way I iron his uniform."

She said the parents are organized and will help with an open house at 6:30 p.m. on July 29 at the squadron headquarters at the Spartanburg Downtown Airport.

Medlock said having a well-trained group of cadets could be crucial in a crisis.

"The cadets do a real good job," he said. "When they're needed they have a big responsibility. A lot of lives could be at stake if an aircraft was down."

Spartanburg Cadets Escort Miss Teen South Carolina Contestants

CAP Escorts Miss South Carolina Pageant Contestants

Cadets from the Spartanburg Composite Squadron and Greenville Composite Squadron recently served as escorts for the contestants during the 2002 Miss South Carolina Pageant, held at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium.

After a dress rehearsal, which familiarized the escorts with the exact procedure they would follow on stage, they participated in three nights of preliminary competition.  The preliminary competition whittled down the field of forty-seven contestants down to ten finalists, who were revealed on the final night.  During the finals, cadets escorted the finalists before a packed auditorium, various media outlets, and state-wide public television, putting CAP in the center of the publicity and action.  Many of the ten finalists had local ties to Greenville and Spartanburg.  Miss Golden Corner, Kelly McCorkle, won the title of Miss South Carolina 2002.

Echoing similar sentiments made about the cadets, Michael Edwards, a stage manger for the event, remarked, “The cadets were an integral part of the performance.  They performed their duties in a very professional manner, helping make this pageant a success.”

Cadet Tech Sgt. Kyle Knight remarked, “It was an interesting and exciting experience, not only when we were in the audience, but when we went on stage, we were able to get an inside look into show business.”

Cadets from Spartanburg Squadron who participated were: Senior Master Sgt. Heath Burgess; Master Sgt. David Collins; Tech Sgt. Ian Sutton; Tech Sgt. Kyle Knight; Staff Sgt. Ryan Smith; Airman 1st Class Clint Wells; and Airman 1st Class Daniel Connor.  From Greenville Squadron, 2nd Lt. Brandon Harmon; 2nd Lt. Christopher Fehrenbacher; and Chief Master Sgt. Hieth Robinson participated.

The event was organized by 1st Lt. Michael Desrochers, the Deputy Commander of Cadets for Spartanburg Composite Squadron.  Also from Spartanburg Squadron,  1st Lt. Lee Berry and 2nd Lt. Heleno Souza provided additional senior member support.

Civil Air Patrol cadet program in planning stages

By ANNA BROWN Staff Writer

Cornell Mauney says learning to fly an airplane early in life helped him develop responsibility and learn how to make good decisions. That's why Mauney, a corporal and school resource officer with the Union Public Safety Department, is trying to establish a local Civil Air Patrol cadet program.

"There is a sense of freedom and control (involved in flying) and lots of responsibility involved," Mauney said. "Once you are up there by yourself, you don't have anybody to call on except the Lord."

Mauney began taking flying lessons when he was a 12-year-old boy in Bessemer City, N.C. His father, knowing he was interested in flying, would cut the runway for pilot Ned Rhyne and in return Rhyne would take Mauney up in a Piper J-3.

"People have done a lot for me in my lifetime as far as flying and other things," Mauney said. "At some point you have to pay people back and this is my avenue to pay them back." With Mauney's help, two local teen-agers have joined the Civil Air Patrol cadet program which meets at the Spartanburg Downtown Airport.

Clint Wells and Heath Burgess, both seniors at Union High School, joined last year. Both hope to attend the United States Air Force Academy. "We have learned about moral leadership, about military manners and aerospace," said Wells. The Spartanburg cadet group, which meets on Monday nights, has more than 40 youths on the roll, with about 20 active members, Wells said.

It is anticipated the ranks will grow as 40 applications were handed out during a recent membership drive. Youths in the cadet program have aerospace training, build and study model rockets, have a chance to fly in different types of aircraft, learn search and rescue techniques, go on retreats and participate in many other activities.

They wear uniforms and go through protocol starting and ending meetings. "It is structured like the military is," Mauney said. " It would be more convenient to have a cadet unit at the Union County Airport, Wells said."

"There would be less travel," he said. The Civil Air Patrol cadet program is open to boys and girls, ages 12-21. Mauney said only five cadets and three adult advisors are needed to start a program. Two Union businessmen have agreed to volunteer with Mauney for the program.

"We just have to have the numbers," Mauney said. "We have the adults, we just need the students." Ready for take-off Clint Wells and H.L. (Tiny) Mize prepare to take off in a 1943 Stearman.

Upstate Billboards are up!!

After months of work, the billboards finally went up on August 10th.  Four billboards were requested from Fairway Outdoor advertising some months ago.  After submitting many photos and discussing the billboard design with them, they produced them and placed them in the following locations.  Greenville: Hudson Road near the railroad tracks.  Spartanburg:  California Ave North of I585 and on eon Hwy 176S 1/4 mile North of Hwy 150.  York: SC 5 4/10 of a mile west of US 321.  We are the only place in the country that has it's own billboards up.  Cadet Carlin is of the York Squadron.  Cadet Lambkin is in the Greenville Squadron.  The aircraft is from the Spartanburg Squadron.

The Hike
September 22nd, 2001
In order to get the cadets used to carrying a loaded pack in a SAR situation, we hike a Caesars Head trail in the Mountains of SC.  Lexington Composite Squadron participated in out trip.  The exercise ended up bringing out the leadership abilities in many cadets.  The hike turned into an emergency situation with everyone getting multiple yellow jacket stings.  All in all, it was an educational hike.
The hike covers a total of 5.1 miles and starts at the Caesars Head State Park parking lot and terminates at the Jones Gap State Park parking lot.  Two trails are used: Trail #15 for 0.8 mile, then Trail #6 for 4.3 miles.

Trail #15 is the Frank Coggins Trail, is marked by single purple blazes (double blazes branch off main trail) and is classified as “Easy.”  The trail is mostly downhill (altitude loss of about 400 feet).

Trail #6 is the Rim of the Gap Trail, is marked by yellow blazes and is classified as “Very Strenuous.”  In reality, the first 1.5 miles are the strenuous part (see below) and the remainder of the trail is gently downhill on a wide trail.
